too many new malls

29 01 2009

So many new malls are sprouting out all over Singapore. Some have been opened (West Coast Plaza, PoMo which was formerly Paradiz centre) but many are still in the midst of construction. With the recession now, i wonder if its a case of too many malls and no customers…I personally think that when all the construction are completed, and the malls opened for business, there will be a lot of window-shoppers but few buyers…

I was at the area recently, and checked out PoMo. Basically its a collection of restaurants, some old, some new. It was very empty the day i went (a Saturday afternoon). Maybe on a weekday, it will see more customers, what with the many schools in the vicinity.

Near PoMo is yet another new mall, yet to be completed. I have no idea what it would be called.

In direct competition with Bugis Junction is Illumina, which will also have a cinema and links to the MRT.

And of course, in Orchard road, there will soon be Ion Orchard and Orchard Central.   In Tampines, Tampines 1 will soon fight it out with the existing Tampines Mall and Century Square. There might be more new malls sprouting out in the heartlands which i am not aware of.

Boom or Gloom for retailers? I really wonder.

Singapore has too many malls i think.

I hear you. They’re planning to build in a mall in sleepy Serangoon Gardens too. NOT happy.

Is it one way to increase the land value in areas surrounding the malls? I wonder… Haha!

In comparison: I read somewhere that the whole of Brunei has only one major mall (source: friends in Brunei).
